The mission of the LPD Traffic Section is to protect lives and property through the aggressive enforcement of the traffic code, within school zones and elsewhere. Particular emphasis is given to enforcing those laws related to impaired driving. Furthermore, the Traffic Section investigates collisions and reconstructs serious collisions to assist the Prosecutors Office in the prosecution of impaired drivers causing such collisions.
The Traffic Section is responsible for the photo enforcement program that monitors specific school zones and signalized intersections statistically demonstrated to have a high numbers of violations or collisions.
Officers of the Traffic Section participate in the regional Pierce County DUI Taskforce and the Metro Collision Response Team.
Traffic officers receive additional specialized training in the detection and recognition of impaired drivers, the enforcement of impaired driving laws and in collision investigation. Traffic officers use motorcycles, unmarked cars, and fully marked patrol cars to support the unit mission.
Citizen volunteers assist the Traffic Section by patrolling the City of Lakewood looking for violations of the disabled parking statutes and issuing tickets to violators.
